Alaska Coastal Mapping Initiative

Hillary Palmer

The Alaska Coastal Mapping Initiative is making progress toward comprehensive statewide coastal imagery, detailed topographic lidar, nearshore bathymetry, and shoreline vector generation as well as build-out of the positional control networks that support these mapping efforts.  The Alaska Mapping Executive Committee’s Coastal Subcommittee has authored two key documents in recent years, the Alaska Coastal Mapping Strategy and the Alaska Coastal Mapping Implementation Plan.  A mapping prioritization survey for coastal areas was conducted in 2019 and another survey including ocean mapping priorities is happening now.  Several web-based GIS platforms and tools have been deployed recently (including a tracking dashboard!) with more on the way to help align Alaska’s Coastal and Ocean mapping needs with Federal programs.

Hillary Palmer is a Project Manager for Dewberry Alaska in their Geospatial and Technology Solutions group.  Hillary has been an Alaska resident for 31 years and has worked for ADOT&PF, USACE, HDR and most recently as the E911 Addressing Officer for the Mat-Su Borough.  Hillary serves as the co-chair for both the Transportation and Coastal & Ocean technical working groups within the Alaska Geospatial Council, and is a member of the Alaska Chapter of APCO/NENA.
